Panama City-- A committee of parents, principals and students examined several different schedule options over the past couple months before deciding on the 7 period day over the current predominate 4-by-4 block schedule. Tuesday, board members agreed, but many students aren't too happy about the changes.

Mosley High Sophomore, Douglas Dick, is one of many students not looking forward to the new schedule.

“Seven periods a day, that means you know homework in seven classes and the work load practically doubles," said Douglas Dick, a student at Mosely High School.

Each class will be 45-50 minutes. Under the block schedule, students completed eight classes a year. Douglas is worried about earning one less credit.

"I try to get in as many dual enroll and AP classes as I can and losing a credit is just going to make it that much tighter," said Douglas Dick.

"There's savings to be made there and it's unfortunate. It's not really fair to students but we have so few options at this point," said Bay District Schools Superintendent, Bill Husfelt.

The change will save the district about $1.7 million dollars, eliminating 40 teaching positions through attrition.

"We have a turnover of 150 teachers every year and so instead of having 100 spots open next year, we are anticipating we'll only have 60," said Husfelt.

Teachers will also have to adapt, doubling the number of classes they lead a day, increasing their student load.

"A lot of my teachers have never taught on anything but a block schedule so it's going to be an adjustment as far as their timing, their pacing," said Mosely High Principal, Sandy Harris.

District staff still has a few details to work out before implementing the new schedule next fall.
