Panama City - This week's Golden Apple award winner teaches dual-enrolled trigonometry at Mosley High School in Lynn Haven. Dauhrice Gibson has been teaching for 49 years. Most of here career was spent teaching at the community college level. Now her high school students say they couldn't be happier she came out of retirement.
"I think one of the coolest things about her is she gets mad at us if you leave the class with a question. She just really wants us to understand it and grasp the concept," said Alex Burgans, the sophomore who nominated Mrs. Gibson. She helps her students tackle the most challenging trigonometry problems knowing full well their success in her classroom makes all the difference in the next. "If they don't understand exactly what I am teaching I have failed in my job. I really want them to understand the concepts as I go along and I will work with them until they do."
"She is a wonderful teacher, she is very patient with us, always caring, wanting us to succeed, she has alot of experience," said junior Zack Hitt. That is an understatement. Having retired from Gulf Coast Community College in 2003 after 41 years of teaching, Gibson says she just couldn't stay away. First substitute teaching, then taking on a full-time role when the district needed her expertise. "We were so fortunate to have her join our staff last year as a dual-enrolled teacher which we desperately needed to be able to offer the dual-enrolled courses here at Mosley High School," said fellow math teacher Suzanne Harrison.
Congratulations to Dauhrice Gibson, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "She really cares about how her students do, she wants us to do well and she really cares about that," said junior Hailey Bain. "It was a teacher who caused me to be a teacher and I want to have that kind of influence on my students," said Gibson.

I was in the first graduating class at Rutherford,1964, and Mrs Gibson was in her first year of teaching after FSU. She was a great teacher then and now. I remember we were taking a trig test when JFK got shot and I had just handed in my paper when the announcement came over the PA system. Needless everyone was shocked beyond belief. She was very emotional and told the class to forget the test it would be taken another day. Mrs Gibson and another math teacher, Mrs Wise were my favorites along with a lot of other students. I just hope that their skill and caring for their students are reflected in today's teachers. God bless them all.
