The first week of prep football practice takes us over to Rutherford, where Coach Jeff Rolson continues to make that program his own, you might say. Jeff says he's dealing with between 45 and 50 players on the varsity level. And in terms of this first week of work, well the idea he says is pretty simple.

Rutherford Head Coach

"Really we want to get our practice schedule established. How to get from drill to drill. What drills we're gonna be doing, where you're supposed to be on the field. Expectations as far as the tempo, things that we want. Get that established in shorts and t-shirts so that when we get the pads on we can get to work."

Coach Rolson came in last winter, replacing the retired Greg Rivers. He guided the Rams through Spring and Summer workouts, so he believes the kids are familiar enough with him and his system heading into the Fall.
Still that doesn't mean there aren't some lingering problems.

"For us it's about tempo and work ethic. And we still have a ways to go. We still have some kids that seem to have trouble at times knowing that they have to practice and what tempo that we have to go. It's gonna get better as time goes on. We had a really good Summer, I was very pleased, we had a good contact camp, I was very pleased. Now is the payoff, so we've got to follow through and finish."

The Rams will host Fort Walton Beach in a preseason classic on the 26th, then start the season for real the following week at Escambia.
