Sandestin- The weather was just right Saturday morning in South Walton for the annual Sandestin Triathlon.

Over 600 athletes competed in the event, which includes a half mile swim in the gulf waters. Swimmers jumped in around 6:30 this morning to some warm water, and quickly swam that half mile, and then headed up the beach for the bike ride.

The second stage of the Triathlon took the athletes on a 20 mile bike ride through scenic 30-A. From there the athletes put the bikes away and starting out on a four mile run to finish the three race event and heading for the finish line. On the men's side Niceville’s Derek Oskutis took the overall win with a time of 1:21:45. On the women's side it was Caroline Smith of Mandeville, Louisiana.

"This is our 24th year so it's always been fun, but this one is a little more pointed because for a while we didn't even know if we could swim.” John Russell Vice President of Sandestin Golf and Beach said. ”The water was great. It was a message to the world that the beaches are clean, and come down to Sandestin and swim."
