PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla- This college football season the Panama City Beach Conventions and Visitors bureau and Tourist Development Council decided to play host to what they call the "World's Greatest Pre-Season Tailgate Party." It's a series of events to give fans a chance to get ready for the season right here in Panama City Beach. The first event on the schedule is the celebrity golf tournament they held thursday at the Hombre Golf Club.
For 100 dollars per person... golfers had the chance to team up with celebrities like former Crimson Tide Quarterback, and Super Bowl Oakland Raiders super bowl champion Kenny "The Snake" Stabler.
He was joined by a few other celebrities including his Oakland teammate and Southern Miss standout Ray Guy. Former Georgia Quarterback David Greene played today, as well as Derrick Oden, and others from the college football world. The event paired teams of four with the celebrities for a round of golf to celebrate the start of the college football season , but it was also aimed at raising awareness that the beaches are open for business. Organizers wanted to let people know they should plan their trips and come play some golf.
"You have some success as an athlete and you try to give back. Playing in local tournaments up and down the Gulf South is a lot of fun." Stabler said. "Been doing alot of it, and eanything to come out and play some golf and raise money for a number of causes."
"The world's greatest tailgate I'm excited about that. It's going to generate alot of interest from different school's around the area which it's alot of representation here , and I'm just glad to be a part of it," added Ray Guy.
If you'd like to meet some of these guys you can head out to several locations on the beach and meet and greet, or get autographs and talk football with them.
