Make some more room in that trophy case at Wewahitchka High School because the softball team is coming home with another 2-A state championship trophy. The Lady Gators beat Providence Christian Thursday afternoon in the title game in Plant City by a final of 4-1.
Samantha Rich gave up just the one run on five hits, she struck out 14. So in 14 innings in the semifinal and the final, she strikes out 32 hitters! The Wewa offense with 4 runs on 8 hits, Robbins and brooks an RBI each, Hillary Chapman with two RBI in the 6th.
Not long after the game I spoke with Coach Adkins about his team's back to back state championships, and what that means to the small school in northern gulf county!
Coy Adkins, Wewahitchka head coach, said, "This year it's a feeling of relief, because of the dominant regular season that we did have. You know all the offensive explosion and Samantha being a year older, so I think the kids kind of felt expected to win it, and we come down here and took care of business, and it's huge relief, I'll be honest with ya. You know, the teams from big towns, they’re private schools so they don't have the community atmosphere that we have, and it's a special feeling, I wouldn't trade it for anything."
The team spent Thursday night down in Central Florida. It will return to the school Friday night at 6, and hopefully a big crowd will be on hand for that.
