DESTIN, FL --- 850 athletes took part Saturday in the 27th annual Sandestin Triathlon at the Sandestin Golf and Beach resort. The compeitiors started jumping into the Gulf of Mexico at 6:30 AM.
Racers from over a dozen different states and ranging from ages thirteen to seventy two began the sprint triathlon with a half-mile swim, then made their way from the beach to their bikes.
There, they peddeled a twenty mile trail for the second straight leg of the race, and finally, topped it all off with a four mile run through the resort and across the finish line.
The triathlon’s impact goes even further than just the race though. “Community involvement is very special to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort”, said Sandestin PR Director Laurie Hobbs. “Sacred Heart Hospital receives more than $20,000 for their worthwhile efforts as result of this race today.”
Excluding 2010 when the oil spill hit, the event has been a sellout for the last ten years.
