3 Panhandle Players Named to NJCAA All American Teams

Marianna/Niceville, FL----Three Panhandle basketball stars are hauling in more postseason honors Thursday. One on the men's side and two on the women's.

Chipola sophomore Sam Cassell Junior earning NJCAA First Team All American honors.

The 6-3 guard leading Chipola to a share of the Panhandle Title, the state title and top 8 national finish with his 19 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

Cassell, who last month was chosen the Panhandle men's player of the year, now bound for Connecticut, he'll try to help the Huskies defend that national championship.

Also a first team All American, Northwest Florida's Simone Westbrook.

The 5-8 freshman guard out of Chandler Arizona leading the Lady Raiders to a 26-7 mark, and berths at state and nationals.

She averaged 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assist and 3 steals per game.

Another freshman, Chipola's Evelyn Akhator, getting second team honors. The 6-2 freshman forward out of Nigeria averaged a double-double this season, 15 points, 12 boards, while helping the Lady Indians to a 34-2 mark, Panhandle and state championships, and a top four national finish.

Akhator last month chosen the Panhandle Conference women's player of the year.
