Alvin Dempsey New Rutherford Coach

Springfield, FL--Over at Rutherford High School there is a new head football coach is now settling into his job, that new coach is Alvin Dempsey.

Monday afternoon Rutherford A-D Kirk Harrell introduced Dempsey as the successor to Jeff Rolson, who left the job after two years to return to central Florida.

If the name Alvin Dempsey is familiar to fans in the area, it should be. Alvin's a 1992 Rutherford grad, a four sport star at the school, including football.

He was a standout defensive back and running back who helped turn a program that hadn't won a game in two seasons into a district champ.

Dempsey played on a scholarship at Southern Miss, then finished his bacehlor's at Troy, got his Masters at Alabama State.

He comes east after spending several years coaching middle and high school ball in Mobile, including 2 years as a head coach at Shaw, he lost that job when Shaw merged with another school. Before that he spent 3 years as defensive coordinator at powerhouse Williamson.

"Well it means a lot to be coming home and coaching at my alma mater." says coach Dempsey. "To get to see a lot of old faces I've missed in the past. Get to see a lot of new faces that came up watching us play football, trying to build the program to where it was and I'm really excited about coming back and doing that."

I spoke with A.D. Harrell about the process of landing Dempsey.
"We had a great selection to choose from." says Harrell. "Probably had forty people that cleared the system that we got to consider. We narrowed down to the top seven, and did interviews. All great men and we think we've chosen a winner here with coach Alvin Dempsey."

Coach Dempsey starts Monday and will immediately take control of the Rams summer workout schedule. Dempsey succeeds Jeff Rolson who decided to head back to central Florida after two years on the job. Interim coach Shawn Killets who guided the team through spring, will remain as offensive coordinator. Harrell says he was not passed over, Killets decided at this time he wanted to remain an assistant coach.
