Panama City Beach, FL--It's going to be an interesting weekend ahead for Bay and FSU alum Bert Reed.
The NFL draft hopeful is spending this weekend at a Boardwalk Beach Resort condo in P.C. Beach with his family. It's there they will wait out the final six rounds of the NFL draft, two rounds
Friday, the other four Saturday.
Thanks in part to an ankle injury that cost him time on the field, like missing the Oklahoma and Clemson games, well Bert's pretty far down on most draft lists.
Still, he's holding out some hope of hearing his name called out in the next 24 hours.
"It's a big dream of a young kid growing up," says Reed "and watching it every time it comes on tv. It's kind of surreal for me, but it's more of a dream really than anything else."
The odd thing is, it might be better for Bert if he doesn't get drafted and is able to sign with a team as a free agent.
"When you're a late pick, like 7th round, it's kind of tough because you don't get to choose where you want to go. And undrafted free agent guy he's got 18, 20 teams talking to you, they're interested in you, where they couldn't draft you, they didn't have enough picks. So you get to choose from these teams, which situation fits you better, which system you can learn easier. And the opportunities are there for you so there is still an upside to not getting drafted."
Bert says his ankle is fine, and he's spent the last three months trying to make himself more "NFL" ready.
"I trained in Atlanta at a place called WBI and I worked on my strength there, I gained like 8 pounds there, got my weight up to 183, 180. And then after that I went up to North Carolina and a place called "Velocity" and I worked with a speed coach there. And I got faster, got quicker. And then finally I went to Miami worked with some guys, got skill work. So I got position work in, I got strength and I got speed, so I tried to do a complete training regimen so I could prepare for this process."
I asked Bert if he had his choice, where would he go, he didn't hesitate, saying he'd love a shot at hooking up with Peyton Manning and the Broncos!
