Panama City, FL-- It's a big weekend ahead for the area's womens college basketball teams. Thursday is the start of Chipola's "Basketball Report Classic" with powerhouse programs like Monroe New York, South Georgia Tech and Kirkwood among those joining the Panhandle Conference teams for four days and nights of play. Gulf Coast's first matchup comes against Kirkwood out of Iowa. That means two recent inductees into the Junior College Coaching Hall of Fame, Roonie Scovel and Kim Muhl will share the court. In fact they were inducted together back in July. So there is, as Roonie Scovell tells us, plenty of mutual respect from bench to bench.
"He's an outstanding coach, he's done a great job at Kirkwood. 6 national championships, you know a zillion region titles and national tournament appearances. So obviously he is a master of the game and just hope we can compete."
At the very least, it should be a good early season measuring stick for Gulf Coast. It's believed this will be the first time two Hall of Famers have coached against each other. That Gulf Coast game Thursday at 6, host Chipola takes on South Georgia Tech at 8. Here's the complete schedule through the weekend.
