Marianna, FL---The Chipola women's basketball program is celebrating it's first Panhandle Conference title in 24 years. Despite having won 4 state titles in that span, Chipola had not won the Panhandle crown since 1990.
Chipola clinching that title Tuesday night with a dominating performance against rival Gulf Coast, beating the Lady Commodores 69-30.
Chipola has two more games before they are able to focus squarely on heading to state as the league champs. That tournament no longer hosted by Chipola, it will be in Ocala this year.
The attached video shows the following:
-The Lady Commodores in pink here, getting the nice spin move and bucket from Jessica Morton.
-The Lady Indians though controlling the action early on, led by guard Diomanisha Sophus, first the jumper falls.
-Then it's Sophus driving through traffic, and finds the right spot on the glass for two more.
-Later good ball movement for Chipola, Sophus to Treyvonna Brooks, then inside to Evelyn Akhotor.
-Chipola in fact dominates this one, winning 69-30. They're 26-1, and 10-0 in conference, and that latter mark clinches their first conference title since 1990, so a 24 year drought ends. Congrats to coach Franklin and the Lady Indians!
