Marianna, FL---Monday was a day of rest for the Chipola women's basketball team and let's just say it's a well deserved rest.
Coach Greg Franklin and his Lady Indians are coming off three straight wins at the state tournament in Ocala, Saturday's win over rival Northwest Florida nailing down the state title!
Certainly no easy feat, but it never is when you're chasing a title in perhaps the most competitive state in juco ball.
"We played well (in Ocala)." says Chipola head coach Greg Franklin. "We played there before and I think we adjusted to the environment well. Obviously we had a rough road, we played the number 18 team in the first game, Palm Beach. And then the number 11 ranked team in Jacksonville, and then the number 7th ranked team in Northwest Florida. It was a tough road to get to where we had to get in winning a state championship, but I wouldn't have it any other way."
So Chipola heads to Nationals in Salina Kansas, heading there a second straight year under the second year coach, who has a tough time hiding the pride he feels in his team these days.
"These young ladies throughout the year have handled adversity well. They've handled success well." Franklin says. "Those are two things that we talk about all the time. If you can wade through adversity and wade through success and stay the course, we'll do magical things. Because obviously we have a lot of talent. I've been blessed with an abundance of talent, but it doesn't speak to the type of kid, the character that they have. And what they've shown through adversity this year. I couldn't be more proud of a group and it couldn't be more deserving for this group, what they've accomplished thus far."
Coach Franklin says the team will get back to practice tomorrow and work out at home through Friday. They'll travel to Kansas Saturday, practice out there Sunday and Monday in advance of their first game. Chipola at 31-1 the second seed of the 24 teams out there, Northwest, with the at-large bid is 9th.
