Salina, KS---The Chipola women's basketball team sees it's season end in a bizarre roller coaster game Friday night in the National Semifinals, falling 78-71 to Hutchinson, Kansas.
The Lady Indians played as poor a first half as they have in a long time, managing just 17 points, which left them trailing 38-17 at halftime. 11 turnovers and poor shooting the combination that took them to that point.
Things improved a bit in the early part of the second half, as Chipola managed to whittle the deficit down. Still the Lady Indians trailed by 17 with just under four minutes to play.
That's when Chipola mounted a valiant, furious comeback effort down the stretch. They pulled to within 7 with about a minute to play when Janisha Lindsey drove and scored on a layup, while taking the foul. That three point play pulled Chipola to within four at 72-68.
A couple of free throws stretched the lead back to 6, Rhani Bell then hit a three pointer with 30 seconds to go to make it a 74-71 game.
Chipola though could get no closer as Hutchinson made all the key free throws from there, and Chipola would miss it's next field goal.
It ended 78-71, leaving Chipola still without an appearance in the National Championship game.
Sue Key led Chipola with 15 points, Brianna Wright had 13 points and ten rebounds.
The loss leaves Chipola with a final record of 33-2. Still a great season, but one that for coach Franklin and the Lady Indians, ended a couple of games too soon.
The team will begin making it's way back home over the weekend.
