MARIANNA, Fla- Chipola hasn't opened conference play in the panhandle, but they are getting ready for their first series this weekend.
The Indians are the odd team out in the five team conference, so they won't open up league play until Saturday when they play at Gulf Coast.
Jeff Johnson's team heading into league play with four straight wins, though it's overall record just 16-11, not the kind of start Johnson was hoping for, though the team's schedule part of the reason for that.
"I feel like we have made some strides in the past week Scott. We're not we're we wanna be, we also know this thing's not a sprint, it's a marathon," Johnson said. "It takes some time. We have one returning pitcher, one returning position player that played a lot for us. So we know there would be some issues of getting things put together for conference. We played a really tough non conference schedule. We were exposed pretty well like we wanted to be. We got exposed more than we wanted to be maybe. But we were really exposed. But I think the kid's attitudes have come back down, we need to listen and learn, we gotta get better and that's what we're trying to do getting ready for Saturday."
Johnson says all the conference teams have beefed up their non conference slates, and that's why the records aren't as gaudy as in year's past heading into league play. That opener at Gulf Coast Saturday set for one o'clock.
