Panama City, FL---The Gulf Coast baseball team has stretched it's lead for second place in the Panhandle Conference to 2.5 games over Chipola thanks to an 8-5 win Monday over Pensacola at Frazier Field.
The Commodores fell behind early in the late afternoon game giving up a run in the first and another in the third.
The Commodores rallied to tie it with 2 in the bottom of the 4th and then three more in the 5th put them up by 3.
The Pirates would rally back to tie it with 3 in the top of the 6th, eventually chasing G.C. starter Brendan Leach. In the bottom of the 6th though three consecutive throwing errors would help the Commodores take the lead for good.
The first coming after a leadoff double by Dalton Kelly, Bay alum Kevin Husum laid down a bunt near the mound, Pirates pitcher Jake Hanson throwing it past his first baseman which allowed Kelly to score.
Then after Husum made it to third, Tyler Dial hit a hot shot to short, Toby Thomas, who made a very nice play to glove the ball, short-hopped the plate with his throw, allowing Husum to slide in.
Another Thomas throwing error on a bouncer by Trevin Hall produced the final Gulf Coast run, as the game would end 8-5. That taking the Commodores overall record to 29-14, 8-5 now in conference play. That has them two and a half games ahead of Chipola for second in the standings, the Indians not playing Monday.
Gulf Coast plays at Pensacola Wednesday, with the chance to stretch that lead to three full games.
The attached video shows the following:
