Cottondale, FL---The search process is under way at Cottondale High School, where there is a need to find a new head football coach for more than a decade and a half.
Mike Melvin is retiring after leading that program the last 16 years. He's going to remain with the school in a teaching position.
First year Cottondale principal Ken Granger telling Newschannel 7 sports Wednesday afternoon he's advertising the job through the school board website, and is already receiving inquiries, in fact one from as far away as Massachusetts.
Given the coaching slot is tied to a teaching position, and right now there are no teaching positions available, well Mr. Granger can't put a time frame on hiring a new coach. Then again that might making promoting from within the staff a good option.
Certainly he says he wants it done by March 1st to that new coach can run spring practice.
Mr. Granger says he's looking for a disciplinarian who can come in with structure, and not be afraid to start from scratch, since they lose 11 of 25 players to graduation from a team that was 9-4 and made it all the way to the 1A state semi's last season.
