Panama City, FL-- First year Principal Billy May is making a head coaching change in the Bay football program. Frank Sorrells is out after two years guiding the Tornadoes. He took over a team that was oh-and 9 under Mike Healy in 2008. He began to turn things around quickly, Bay 4-6 in oh-9, then 5-5 last season, all that in the very tough 3A district one playing against the likes of Choctaw, Pensacola, Arnold and Rutherford. May says the move is not based on the team's performance on the field.
"We decided to make the change for some long term continuity and that's where we're at. I think it's probably being mulled over in my mind for a month or two now. There's no culminating event, it's just the fact that I believe that Bay High athletic program needs to have a certain direction and that direction involves somebody who is going to be here for a period of years instead of just one or two."
Sorrells declined to go on camera but did tell us he was notified of the decision yesterday afternoon before practice, adding he felt blindsided by it.
He says he did want to coach at Bay at least another year or two.
He told the team the news at today's practice. Sorrells said he will fufill his contract through June 30th, including coaching the team in the Jamboree Friday.
He says he doesn't know exactly what his next step will be, but he's not ruling out a return to coaching.
May says a search committee will now go about the hiring a new head football coach.
