Niceville, FL--To say the least it's been a good start for the Northwest Florida Raiders in terms of conference play. Certainly Wednesday night's win over previous unbeaten and nationally top ranked Chipola is something to be happy about.
Chris Jones knocking down 18 and the previously 7th ranked Raiders playing a smothering style of defense on the way to the 80-65 victory.
That taking Northwest to 16-1 overall, more importantly 2-0 in Panhandle Conference play, and the early league lead.
Northwest Head Coach Steve Forbes says his guys were certainly psyched up for that game, then again they always are when it's Chipola coming to the Arena.
"It's a rivalry game, you know Chipola and Northwest Florida is a good rivalry. So it's gonna be a hard fought game no matter what Scott. But I think you add the rankings, you add the records, it adds more to it. We were in the same position a year ago as you remember, we were 17-0 and went to Pensacola and got beat. It happens. That didn't win the league for us and Chipola didn't lose the league by losing the game last night. You know they had a really good team and there's a lot of games left to be played.:
The Raiders, and Lady Raiders, who also won last night, so they're 1-1 in league play, are back at it Saturday when they host Pensacola.
The Gulf Coast teams, both winners last night at Pensacola, will play at Tallahassee. The Chipola teams are off Saturday.
