Former Wewa, Mosley Coach Passes Away

Citronelle, AL---There is some rather sad news concerning former Wewahitchka and Mosley head basketball coach Tommy Long this Christmas eve.

Coach Long died of an apparent heart attack while at Smithtown Baptist Church in Citronelle, about an hour north of Mobile.

Long was head coach at Citronelle High School, and was also the pastor at the Church he died in.

His team, at 5-4, just coming off play in one tournament, and scheduled to play in another later this week. No doubt a terrible heartbreak for those kids.

Coach Long's loss also felt back in our area. The University of West Florida grad spent 24 years coaching, a big chunk of that at Wewa and Mosley. He was at Mosley between 2003 and 2007.

His principal during his time at Mosley was current Bay County School Superintendent Bill Husfelt. I spoke with Mr. Husfelt Monday by phone and he said this about coach Long.

"Everybody thought the world of coach Long, he was a good man. When you're a teacher in a school as long as he was at Mosley you are like family, we will certainly be praying for him and his family."

Mr. Husfelt also told me he's seen a lot of coach Long's former players sharing thoughts and memories about him on Facebook, adding the coach's passing is a shock to everybody.
