FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla- Boy's District basketball tournaments start Friday. Fort Walton Beach takes alot of momentum into the 5A district 2 tourney after a 24-1 regular season.
The Vikings have just one blemish on their record this season after starting the year 22-0. Their lone loss came late in the season to district rival Crestview, and the team is using that as motivation for a much bigger goal.
"Just taking that pressure off and refocusing and seeing what kind of team you want to be," Head Coach John Lavin said. "Do you want to be a team that won alot of games during the regular season, or do you want to be a team that made a special trip and possibly won a state championship. I think that's kind of refocuses them on what their priorities are going to be."
This is the Vikings chance to put their mark on the program, and they have 10 seniors that are the catalyst for their success this year.
"We've got a blend of leadership and athleticism, kids who really believe in the system. They've been in it four years, so that's one of the main things that have helped this team succeed," Lavin added.
Coach Lavin is keeping the team grounded, and making sure they understand how special this season can be.
"Just really enjoying each other, enjoying the company that we have, and enjoying this special relationship that we've built. Because it's not going to last very long here, so they want to make it last as long as they can. We want to make it last as long as they possibly can."
The next step on the ride is the district tournament on the road at Crestview.
Coach Lavin said, "The district is going to be very tough at Crestview, but if we can win that we feel like we have a great chance to win our region and get to Lakeland."
Fort Walton Beach opens with Mosley at 5:30 on Friday. Crestview and Nicville play in the other semi-final at 7.
