GC Legend Roonie Scovel Coaching Again

Defuniak Springs, FL---Here's one I'm not too sure many of us expected to hear! Roonie Scovel is back in the coaching ranks.

Just over a year removed from stepping down as the head coach of the Gulf Coast women's basketball program, Coach Scovel has taken over the girl's team at Walton Middle School.

Coach Scovel telling me her motivation for the move is to get back to where her career began, that being the Walton county area.

She says she's excited about the prospect of coaching again, and working to improve the lives of youngsters, both athletically and otherwise.

Coach Scovel says some 80 kids showed up for tryouts a few weeks ago, and despite the large numbers, she has much work ahead of her to make her youngsters into a good basketball team. But is no doubt looking forward to that challenge.

Scovel was the head coach at Gulf Coast for 16 seasons, with a 458-59 record, 13 conference, 8 state, and 3 national championships. All that earning her a spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

She stepped down after the 2011-2012 season to focus on her personal life, staying on at Gulf Coast for a time, as a student adviser. Now she's back on the floor with whistle in hand. We wish her and her new program the best of luck.
