Panama City Beach, FL---Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial kickoff of the summer and it's tough to find a sport that better symbolizes the season quite like baseball.
Youth teams from all around the area and the southeast traveled to Frank Brown Park Saturday for the Grand Slam Memorial Day Baseball Beach Blast.
It's a two day tourney, featuring athletes as young as eight and as old as 14, taking each other on in the second event Grand Slam Baseball has thrown this year at Frank Brown.
46 teams from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, all fighting for an early championship to gain momentum, while the organization itself is building up speed as the Memorial Day weekend action is just the beginning of a very busy summer season.
"This tournament typically draws 50 to 60 teams every year, so it's right in line with what we do," Larry Thompson. "It kinda kicks off our summer season and then we follow this up with our Battle of the Beach here in a couple of weeks in mid June. And then we have our four World Series events, one half-week World Series and then is followed by three full week events which draws 500 teams from 20-plus states from all around the country."
Action continues Sunday on day two in AM at Frank Brown Park.
