Panama City, FL---It's the beginning of another basketball season Friday night over in Pensacola for the Gulf Coast men's team, which plays in a tournament over there.
Coach Jay Powell and his guys coming off a 20-9 season, just 5-7 though in the Panhandle Conference. Powell's confident the team is going to improve on that given a good core base of returning starters, who can't wait to lead their freshman brethren on to the floor.
"At the beginning of each season there is a level of excitement amongst the men and the coaches." says coach Powell. "I think that permeates about the community a little bit. We have the sophomores that return, that people know are returning, Devon Baulkman, Andrew Fishlir and Basil Deveaux. All three of those men earned extensive playing time last season. And all three of them are providing leadership right now, at a level that we haven't had in several years here."
Baulkman, the 6-7 guard out of Bainbridge the returning starter with the highest points per game average at 15. Rutherford alum Jon Wade, coming off a redshirt year, set to go, it will be interesting to watch him develop in this league. Commodores start Friday at 5:30 against Lamar State.
