Panama City, FL----You might not think summer time is all that important for area high school players. Think again!
Like football, baseball, soccer, and other sports, it more or less takes a year long commitment these days to excel on the prep basketball level.
With that in mind, area coaches play a limited summer season against other teams in the area.
As part of all that, Gulf Coast hosting a 13 team, three day basketball camp that includes head to head games. The two here, Fort Walton Beach and Rutherford, joining other area teams like Graceville, Bay, Vernon along with some squads from Georgia.
Rutherford able to defeat Fort Walton Beach in a Monday afternoon game, not a problem says Vikings coach John Lavin, this time of year, it's all about improving.
"You try and test your kids in practice every day but getting your kids in game type settings where officials and fans are out there watching, it's a whole level of different kind of play. Teams like Rutherford, teams like Graceville, that are so well coached with Coach Ross and Coach Anderson, that's what you get. You see things that you can get better at and it really tells you a lot about your team."
This camp at Gulf Coast runs through Wednesday, so if you wish to see some summer hoops, head over to the Harrison Field House in the next couple of days.
