Gulf Coast to Honor Roonie Scovel Saturday

Panama City, FL-- Saturday is going to be a rather big day for the Gulf Coast basketball family, and one that is much deserved.

Saturday at 2 pm at the Billy Harrison Field House, Gulf Coast will honor recently retired women's head coach Roonie Scovel.

Many of her former players will be on hand, some traveling hundreds of miles to participate and pay tribute to the coach who helped them succeed in a variety of ways.

Scovel coached at Gulf Coast some 16 seasons, posting an incredible record of 458-59.

Her teams won 13 conference, 8 state, and 3 national championships.

Saying it was simply time to walk away, coach Scovel retired at the end of this season, in which her team put up a 22-4 record and at 9-3, shared the conference crown with Pensacola.

Roonie staying on with Gulf Coast as a student adviser. Her successor wound up being one of her former pupils, Vernette Skeete, so the Scovel legacy will live on in a real way within the program.

Again the ceremony honoring Roonie set for 2 o'clock, given what she's meant to the college, and our area as a whole, that gym should be packed!
