Gulf Coast Opens League Play Saturday

Panama City, FL--Talk about a great way to start the conference basketball season! The Gulf Coast Lady Commodores travel west to Niceville in 3 days to take on the Lady Raiders of Northwest Florida State.
¶ Gulf Coast heads into that league opener at 13-1. Northwest Florida is a perfect 16-0. That lone Gulf Coast loss you could argue was just a blip in an otherwise stellar non conference run. After all the Lady Commodores are averaging almost 30 points more a game, than they are giving up, a pretty strong formula. Roonie Scovel agrees though she knows there's plenty of room for improvement.
"I think defensively we're strong. We're holding teams to 40-something points but that's not Panhandle teams. And we're scoring 70-something. Our perimeter scoring, our perimeter shooting has been a little weak, a little inconsistent in this Fall season. So hopefully that will step up a notch. Our guard play is good, our defense, our team defense has been outstanding, at times, it's looked good. And I think that's gonna have to stay polished and maybe even have to get a little better on our team defense going into the Panhandle."
Northwest's JoAnna Harden scoring 18 a game, second in the state, and Gulf Coast's Uju Ogoka is third with 17 and a half per. Game time for the ladies Saturday 5:30, the men tip at 7:30.
