Panama City, FL--To basketball news and congrats are in order for Gulf Coast women's head coach Roonie Scovel. She's been elected into the National Junior College Hall of Fame, and will go into the Hall with Kirkwood Iowa coach Kim Muhl, that ceremony set for Nationals in March in Kansas. In her 14 seasons at Gulf Coast Scovel's racked up a 422-44 record with 3 national championships,12 conference and 8 state, or region titles to her credit. She's coached 12 All-Americans, and 39 of her players have gone on to four year programs and graduated. Roonie was nominated by A.D. Greg Wolfe back in the fall, and was notified by Wolfe her election was official Tuesday. Scovel telling me Wednesday afternoon her first thought after hearing the news was "Wow!" She says she's been to other inductions and thought how amazing it was to make it to the Hall, and always wondered if she could make it there some day. Now be in that mix, she says, is something pretty special and amazing.
