Port St. Lucie, FL--The Holmes Blue Devils will play Tuesday for their first ever state baseball championship. That's because Holmes was able to get past Bozeman 7-1 Monday in their 1A state semifinal at Digital Domain Stadium in Port St. Lucie.
The Devils were the beneficiary of an obviously nervous Bozeman starter Matt Hall. In the bottom of the first, The left walked a hitter, then hit two more before giving up a two run double to senior Will Thompson. Eventually Ryan Hardy relieved Hall in the inning, but proceeded to walk in a run and surrender another run on a double play ball. Just like that Holmes had a 4-1 lead.
The Bucks battled back thanks to some wildness from Thompson, who gave up a single to Hall and then three walks to produce a run for Bozeman.
Thompson though came through again in the 4th with an rbi double plating Cole Long who had singled. A designated runner came on for Thompson and that runner scored when Forehand's fly to right was dropped by Joey Brannen. That made it 6-1.
In the bottom of the 6th, following a Long triple, Thompson drove one to left, deep enough to score Long on a sacrifice fly, and that finished the scoring.
On the hill, Thompson would yield just the one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out five. He's now 11-0 on the season.
The Blue Devils are now 25-3 and move into the 1A title game Tuesday at 4 eastern against Union, out of Lake Butler in the Jacksonville area. Ty Russ expected to get the start for Holmes in that one.
The Bucks end their memorable season at 21-8.
