Holmes Falls in 1A Championship Game

Port St. Lucie, FL--The Holmes baseball team will have to settle for being state runner up instead of walking away with the program's first ever state baseball championship.

The Blue Devils fell behind Union early in their 1A title game Tuesday and was never able to catch up, eventually losing the championship game 6-3 at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie.

Holmes starter Ty Russ hurt by a couple of first inning errors that led to a run on a sacrifice fly.

A two out walk in the top of the 3rd sparked another Tigers rally.
Two singles and an outfield error followed the walk plating two runs. A wild pitch, another walk and one more single pushed home the third run in that inning, and Holmes trailed 4-0.

Union went on to score single runs in the 4th and 5th, stretching the lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the 5th, the Holmes bats came alive. A Phil Ogolio triple plated the first Blue Devils run. That triple a line shot down the left field line, and it scored the pinch runner Bryant.

Ogolio then scores when J.R. Miles bounces one off the pitcher's glove and beats out an infield single. That made it a 6-2 game.

In the bottom of the 6th another big hit coming off the bat of Jordan Worthing, a double to the wall in left center. That scored Cole Forehand who got on with a fielder's choice following a single by Kodi Russ.

That would be as close as the Blue Devils get though. They would get a man on in the bottom of the 7th, and with slugger Will Thompson on deck, anxious to bring the tying run to the plate, Cole Long stroked one to the warning track in left. But that ball caught, ending the game and ending Holmes' bid for that first state championship. The team sees it's season end at 25-4.
