Bonifay, FL--It's just one more day of work on the practice field before the Holmes baseball team loads up the bus and heads south for a rather big road trip, the most important trip in fact for that program ever.
Coach Ron Dixon and his Blue Devils are getting ready
for their first trip to the state finals since 1973, and just their third trip ever.
Holmes certainly deserving of final four status after a 20-3 regular season, two wins in district and two state playoff wins, so now 24-3 overall.
"I thought our efforts been good all year." says coach Dixon. "We came out with a plan. We have some seniors that have been with us a long time and they felt like we wanted to do something special this year, and it looks like we're gonna get that opportunity Monday. I think they're effort has been there all year and their focus has been really good."
Monday's game in Port St. Lucie in the 1A state semifinals comes against 21-7 Bozeman.
Coach Dixon hoping his Devils won't be overwhelmed by the big stadium there, or the pressure involved. He simply wants his guys to play the way they have all season, since it's been a rather winning formula so far.
"Pitching and defense. We've got five guys we've thrown this year, but we've got some guys that have really held some people in check. Offensively we've got some timely hits and we've got some guys with some good averages and things like that. But timely hitting has been a big key for us this season and we just hope that continues."
And when you look at the numbers of the frontline pitchers, you see why pitching is a strong point, TCC signee Will Thompson, leads the way at 10-0, an e-r-a under one. Ty Russ 6-0, 1-62, and Jordan Worthing is 4-0, a 1.16 earned run average.
Holmes heads south Saturday at 8 am, Bozeman leaves at 3 pm Saturday.
