Marianna, FL---It's just about time for a very important road trip for Jeff Johnson and his Chipola Indians.
Come Friday they'll start play in the state tournament, taking on Miami Dade in Lakeland.
Given their shaky start to the season,a 12-9 record after 21 games, then a 4-7 start in conference play, well it's safe to say the Indians surprised a bunch of folks by making it to State.
"Yeah you know we didn't play well early in the year." Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson admits. "We had 20 of our 25 guys were freshman. So we knew it would take some time. We had a tough schedule. and thank goodness we started maturing and developing as the year went along and learned how to play the game late."
And coming on strong late in the season seems to be a trend with Chipola lately. Is it a case of always peaking at the right time?
"Well I don't know if we've peaked yet." says coach Johnson. "I hope we haven't. We need to continue to play better. The one good thing wth these two weeks off is hopefully it's allowed us more time to improve. And that's the way we've taken it. Hopefully we'll get better both on the mound and at the plate."
The team leaving for Lakeland Wednesday, the opener at Joker Marchant Stadium against Miami Dade set for 7 pm eastern time Friday.
