Juco Diamond Update, Gulf Coast, Chipola Headed to State


Panama City, FL---The Gulf Coast Commodores baseball team has officially booked their first trip to the state tournament since 2010.

Saturday's 7-6 win over Northwest Florida guaranteed that GC will finish no worse than second in the Panhandle Conference.

Since the top two teams get automatic bids to the tourney in Lakeland May 9th, the 'Dores know for a fact they'll get to play on once the regular season wraps up on April 29th.

They'll be joined at state by the Chipola Indians, who also earned a postseason spot Saturday, defeating Pensacola in seven innings up in Marianna 10-2. Chipola sits a game back of Gulf Coast in the loss column as of April 20th.

First place Gulf Coast has four games remaining in their conference slate, while Chipola only has three Panhandle contests remaining.

While Gulf Coast and Chipola know their season will carry on to the playoffs, Northwest Florida is fighting to stay alive. The team that finishes in third place get's a play-in game with the chance to make State as a Wild Card. The Raiders lead Tallahassee by two and a half in the standings for that honor.

In softball, the regular season is officially in the books and the seeding has been set. The top four from the Panhandle conference advance to the postseason in Tallahassee, Northwest Florida, Chipola, and Gulf Coast.

The FCSAA State Tournament play begins for softball Friday May 2nd.
