Panama City, FL--As Gulf Coast Head Softball Coach Susan Painter tells us, she can't wait to get off the road. Her team is getting set to make it's home opener Thursday, in fact with a doubleheader against Chattanooga State.
That comes after 15 road games to start the season!
"Well we're looking forward to our home opener.." says coach Painter. "You know this is our field and we feel comfortable playing here. So we're excited for it and I think the girls are too."
As they should be. The Lady Commodores have not played a home game yet this year. Leaving the young players with a rude awakening from their month long road trip, which could be a reason for the Lady 'Dores 3-4 start,
"I feel like we have a lot of Freshman," says sophomore Oliva McLemore "and they didn't really know what to expect with traveling and what was going on so I feel like that had a lot to do with it"
But one thing is for certain, this team of road warriors will be a formidable opponent once they start playing other Panhandle teams, so says pitcher Amanda Grimaldo.
"I think with conference because now that we have had the experience of, 'okay, what is it going to be, we have to arrive in two hours and then we gotta stretch and get all hyped again for the game".
The games Thursday set for 2 and 4 o'clock starts. Then Friday Gulf Coast heads into play in the annual Gulf Coast Beach Classic with games that run through Sunday at Frank Brown Park.
