Salina, KS---The Gulf Coast Lady Commodores are back in the national semifinals, getting there Thursday with a 72-61 win over previously undefeated Shelton State.
First year coach Vernette Skeete and her team falling behind 7 early, but rallied with a good spurt around the 12 minute mark of the first half to take the lead by as many as 5. Shelton rallied and the two teams exchanged the lead for the remainder of the half with Gulf Coast eventually taking a 33-32 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, they would continue with runs, exchanging the lead until near the 10 minute mark, when Gulf Coast rallied to pull out to a double digit lead, 54-44. And though Shelton would continue to fight back, the Lady Commodores were able to hang on and win by 9.
Nicole Sterling leading the way with 16 points, Roshinha Rosario, MarLisa Braxton and Tamara Taylor all chipping in with 14 each.
The win Thursday puts Gulf Coast into the national semifinals and a game against top ranked Trinity Valley out of Texas at 6 pm Friday.

After falling behind by 7 at the start, Lady Commodores rally, first Taylor for three to get things going, and then late in the half, with a one point lead, Nicole Sterling drives, misses and puts it back, 33-32 Gulf Coast at the half.
Second half they traded the lead for the first ten minutes or so, the Lady Commodores with a spurt to begin to pull away, Tamara Taylor spins and hits it off the glass.
Follow that with a long pass ahead to Sterling for two more, then it's Rosario for a dagger three point to go up by ten. Gulf
