Lady Indians Set for Title Shot in Lakeland

Lakeland, FL---To say the least Saturday is a big day for the Choctawhatchee High School girl's basketball team.

Coach Don Brown and company will play in the 6A state championship game against Edgewater down at the Lakeland Center, the Lady Indians hoping to win their program's first ever state title.

They made it to the championship game with a 55-48 win over Winter Haven.

That keeping the team undefeated, the record now stands at 31-0. I spoke with coach Brown Friday night about how long it took for the girl's to celebrate that win and then move on to focus on the task ahead.

"Well it was kind of difficult, our kids have never been here before. Just getting an opportunity to play in this type of a setting was kind of big for them. We had some workouts in some local colleges and universities and it kind of helped us get prepared for here in Lakeland and they did a good job yesterday. So I'm real proud of them for that."

I also asked the coach how he made use of this day in between the semifinal and final game!

"Yeah we got an opportunity to get into a gym and work on some things we want to try to do tomorrow, as far as preparing for Edgewater. Right now they're about as relaxed as they're gonna be, you know I really don't see any nervousness, they're just excited about getting to play for a state title."

And again that championship game set for 1:35 eastern in Lakeland. The coach says several busloads of students, faculty and fans are heading down for the game.
