Springfield, FL---The Rutherford softball team must like to make things interesting because their playoff opener Wednesday night at Shamplain was certainly that, and then some. The Lady Rams getting a 1-0, 9 inning win over Wakulla in their 5A region quarterfinal.
Becca Taylor carrying the bulk of the load for Rutherford as she tossed 9 innings of four hit, shutout ball. Her team was unable to get any runs across until the bottom of the 9th.
That winning rally was rather simple. Aaliyah Maiben got hit by a pitch. With her on first and one out, Kaylyn Julian laid a bunt down towards the mound. Wakulla's pitcher scooped it, thought about second and threw to first to retire Julian. But the Lady Eagles first baseman threw towards second hoping to catch Maiben who had rounded the bag. But that throw sailed into the outfield and past Wakulla's left fielder, allowing Maiben to race around third and score the game winner.
Taylor finished with 12 strikeouts. Rutherford, now 18-7 will play at Suwannee in the region semi's Tuesday.
The attached video shows the following:
