Local Runners Describle Celebration of Closure at Boston Marathon

Boston, MA---The Panhandle isn't geographically tied to Boston. Unless you are from there or have family there, you might not know the area, the city, or it's people.

But after the horrific Marathon bombings in 2013, on Monday, no one needs to be from there to feel proud for this city.

As the second largest field in the event's 118 year history took to the streets with a million supporters cheering them on, audience's locally and all over watched sending support.

But some of our area's own, ten actually, ran in this historic race.

Talking to them over the phone, they shared their excitement and their emotions after being able to help bring closure to a city and it's people as they witnessed Boston's strength up close.

"We, as a nation, as Americans, can pull together and how we move forward," said Panama City Native Amy Mann. "You continue to challenge yourself, and you continue to do big things in your life, and for your loved ones, and for your community. And that's how you move forward."

"All the Bostonians, they love to showcase their city," said Panama City's own, Joe Edgecombe. "The race is one thing. You can race good or bad, but there's not one city that ever gives you that welcome."

"When I crossed the finish line, I don't get teary-eyed but I did get teary-eyed this time," said Southport's Marty Kirkland. "I mean, this is probably going to be my last marathon, and how better can you do it than to end it at Boston?"

Kirkland and Edgecombe both took part in the 2013 event, but were unable to finish once the two bombs detonated, and were invited back in 2014 without needing to re-qualify to finish what they started.

Mann, who was up in Beantown for her second Marathon in the city, ran a personal best in her 26.2 mile trek.
