Locals Compete For World Sailing Championship

Ballyholme, N. Ireland---You may not know it, but our area is being represented this week in a world championship sporting event.

In fact two young men who grew up sailing at the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club are in Northern Ireland taking part

Mosley grad Matthew Whitehead, and Rutherford alum Taylor Reiss are through the first day of racing over there. The official website shows the results from just one race of Monday's scheduled three races, with the local team finishing 7th out of 57 teams in that first race. The site lists 14 more races to come.

It's quite a experience for Reiss, who's 19 and Whitehead, who is 21. These two by the way, the Youth World Champions from 2013 after finishing the highest among youth teams at last year's F18 Championships in Italy.

This time around teams from Germany, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Australia, Argentina, Finland, Ireland among those competing. Reiss and Whitehead the only U.S. team in the event.
