Dunedin, FL--- Just a few days into spring training and there's bad news for Marianna alum Jeff Mathis. He's going to have to sit out
some six weeks recovering from a fractured collarbone.
Over the weekend Jeff took a foul tip off the bat of Matt Holliday in a spring game against the Cardinals.
That tip catching Mathis just over the top of his chest protector, causing the fracture.
The injury certainly hampers Jeff's chances of winning the starting catcher's job with the Marlins. He was competing with 24 year old Rob Brantley for that spot, Brantley with just 100 big league at bats.
Mathis, the backup in Toronto last season, was part of that blockbuster trade between the Marlins and Jays in the off season. Let's hope Jeff heals quickly and doesn't miss too many games in April.
