Panama City, FL--It is just about time for big league pitchers and catchers to report to their respective Spring training sites and that means Mosley and Gulf Coast alum David Herndon is getting set to pack his bags.
Herndon, who worked his way to the Phillies bullpen after four years in minor league ball, struggled through his rookie campaign in 2010 with a 3-7 e-r-a. He improved markedly last season with a 3-3 e-r-a, and 39 k's in 57 innings, also racked up a save. The difference says David, developing a second pitch.
"For me as far as learning something, benefittng from it was learning the slider. It had been inconsistent for me the years before. And this was the first year it really was a consistent pitch for me and it got a lot of swings and misses. The scouting reports are really advanced there. If you're a guy that comes in with a power sinker, my first year I was just a sinker guy, with the occasional slider. The scouting report gets around and they'll start sitting on it, and it doesn't matter how good the pitch is, those guys up there are paid to hit, so you have to mix everything up you have to approach guys different, throw stuff backwards, it's just a whole different ballgame."
David just about ready to head Clearwater where the Phillies train during Spring. Pitchers and catchers report on the 18th. The first workout is the 19th of February.
Going into his third year in the big's, we asked him if he's beginning to feel more and more like a veteran, he didn't have to think about his answer long.
"I think you should always have that mentality, you're out there pitch after pitch after pitch. If you go out there and think you're a veteran, you'll get humbled real quick in this league, so you have to have an open mind, in anything you do really."
David knows the Phillies pen is deep and he'll have to work hard to keep his spot. The Phil's adding Papelbon in the off season and the pen also has the likes of Worley, Contreras, Bastardo and Kyle Kendrick.
