Gainesville, FL--If you watch the Gators play these days, well you certainly aren't watching much vertical passing.
In fact, the best play in the Gators arsenal seems to be the zone read, where quarterback Jeff Driskel either hands it to Mike Gilleslee or another running back, or keeps it himself and takes off around the end.
Certainly the latter worked big time at Vandy, Driskel winding up with 177 yards rushing and three td's. Florida coach Will Muschamp talked about what it is that is making this such a "go to" play for the Gators.
"Obviously the fake is key and the execution of the assignments of the blocks, and that's where we've been good because a lot of people are giving us different looks because of the run game and our players and staff have done a really nice job of adjusting to the looks. Hunter Joyer did a really nice job the other night adjusting to some of the different looks on the backside of the zone read and adjusting to those. I think all of those combinations are certainly helping it."
By the way, the Gamecocks may be without their best weapon in the run game Saturday. Star tailback Marcus Lattimore missed practice Wenesday. He's reportedly nursing a hip injury suffered at LSU. Steve Spurrier saying Wednesday afternoon Marcus may have to sit out the Florida game, a big blow indeed if that happens. Game time in the Swamp 3:30 eastern, see it on our sister CBS station WECP.
