Chipley, FL--- For some 8 area class 1A teams, Tuesday marks the start of the state playoffs.
Those 8 will go head to head Tuesday night in what they call region semifinals, trying to nail down the first of four wins necessary to win it all.
Among those match ups, 22-5 Chipley, the defending 1A state champs, at 24-2 Malone.
Many thought these two would be going head to head in round two, as district champs.
But Holmes knocked off Chipley in their 1A-2 title game, so it's Tigers vs. Tigers Tuesday.
"Well the panhandle as you know is very strong in 1A with Bonifay, Malone, and other schools in the area." says Chipley head coach Joel Orlando. "I wasn't aware, Chipley hasn't won in Malone, since last year for the very first time. Now to have to go back in there and try to do it again is gonna be very difficult. You know many times the state championship game usually, or can be played before the final match up.
Both teams coming off long layoffs since district 9 days ago, and coach Orlando says that's both a negative, and a positive.
"Well I think it's huge. It's a double edged sword. You can get a little rusty. And at the same time you can spend a little extra time getting ready for you opponent. Playing Malone is difficult because they give you so many match up problems. You know sometimes you go into a game and you change your game plan the day of the game. So we have a basic game plan, we're gonna stick with it, and hopefully it works for us."
The coach referring to the win last February in the region final. Malone won their only head to head game this year, at the tourney at Grand Ridge, 77-64. Expect a standing room crowd only inside that Malone gym.
