Panama City Beach, FL---The Rutherford Rams are the champs of 5A district 1 thanks to an 8-5 win over Gulf Breeze at Gavlak Thursday night.
The Rams fell behind early when a somewhat shaky Cody Roby gave up two runs in the first. Rutherford though came right back with 3 runs in the bottom of the first, one on a Dallas Davis rbi single to left, and two more on fielder's choices.
Gulf Breeze answered back with two more runs in the second but the Rams stormed back with 5 in the bottom half of that inning. The first two coming on an absolute bomb by Nick Nelson, a home run that glanced off the light pole beyond the left field fence. It's the 6th homer of the year for Nelson, and were his 48th and 49th rbi on the season.
An error, and rbi single by Dondrayas Harris and Davis getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded plated the other three runs in the inning.
From there the Rams held on to win 8-5. So Rutherford gets to start the state playoffs at home next week.
The attached video shows the following:
Cody Roby a bit shaky in the first, runners at second and third, nobody out, Andy Creech singles up the middle, Dondrayas Harris let's it roll under his glove, two runs in, 2-0 Dolphins.
Rams counter in the bottom half, Dallas Davis with the sharp single to left, Dondrayas around from second, tough to throw him out, it's 2-1. A fielder's choice ties it, then another fielder's choice on Zack Davis' bouncer gives the Rams a 3-2 lead.
Top of the second though a bloop single plates one for Gulf Breeze then this Taylor Baynes single to center plates another and the Dolphins back on top 4-3.
Bottom two, Rams retake the lead in a most definitive way, Dallas Davis on board and Nick Nelson with another moon shot, off the light pole in left, his 6th homer, 48th and 49th rbi of the season.
Rams get three more on a error on a bunt by Tyler Broxson, a Dondrayas rbi single and Dallas Davis getting hit with the bases full, it was 8-4, Rams hold on from there to win it 8-5. So Rutherford will host their first round playoff game next week.
