Panama City Beach, FL---To say the Rutherford and Arnold boy's soccer teams played a thriller Tuesday night at Gavlak would be a rather big understatement. The Rams emerged from the 3A district 2 tournament semifinal with a 3-2 overtime win, so they play on, while Arnold sees it's season end.
The two teams each put up a first half goal, and it was still tied at one until very late in the match. The Rams broke the tie with a goal at the 5 minute mark, thanks to a cross by Drew Wyllie, a header by Dallas Davis and eventually the foot of Matt Baumgartner.
Just a few minutes later the refs called a foul on Rutherford that was not readily apparent to those watching, still it gave Arnold a penalty kick which Austin Masker took advantage of, kicking it home for a tying goal.
In the first ten minute overtime period, Arnold keeper Trevor Jacquay kept his team alive by denying a penalty kick after a foul was called on Arnold in the box. Jacquay diving to his right to deny the shot of Baumgartner.
On the ensuing corner kick though, kicked in by Aldo Gomez, Baumgartner able to get his head on it and past the Arnold keeper for what they call the golden goal, a goal that ends the match.
So Rutherford plays on, and into the district final Friday night at Choctaw. Arnold sees it's season come to an end.
