Rutherford Gets 68-51 Playoff Win Thursday

Springfield, FL---The Rutherford Rams are among the area teams advancing past the first round of the boy's state basketball playoffs.

Coach Rhondie Ross and his Rams beating Wakulla on the home floor Thursday night in their 5A region quarterfinal, 68-51.

That score not indicative of just how poorly the Rams started in this one. Rutherford plagued early with turnovers, and a series of traveling calls against them. Fortunately the Rams found themselves down just 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Rams came alive, outscoring Wakulla 20-5 in that period, giving Rutherford a 30-19 lead at the half. The Rams would roll from there, stretching the lead to 17 by the end.

Khaliel Spearman led the way for the Rams with 20, Gabe Steele had 17 and senior Keith Arts added 14.

The victory takes Rutherford's record to 24-2 and into the 5A state region semifinals. They'll host that game Tuesday against Rickards which beat Choctaw. 76-66.

The attached video shows the following;

-Rams hoping to avoid the fate of last season, a first round playoff exit!
Frankly it was a very shaky start for Rutherford, Wakulla in blue, taking advantage of turnovers and badly missed shots to grab an early lead, first Sharod Senatus feeds Bryson Beverly on the break.

-Then it's Beverly with the nice spin move baseline.

-Later Sheldon Johnson drives and one, War Eagles led it 14-10 into the second quarter.

-There the Rams finally come alive, first off the inbounds, Josh Wade gets the left hander to fall.

-Gabe Steele then goes top of the key to knock down three morel.

-Then on the break, it's Steele leading the way, and Chris Foster taking the dish inside for the bucket and the foul.

-Then Steele back outside, from the Wakulla bench basically.

-The Rams win the second quarter 20-5, take a 30-19 lead into the locker room and go on to win 68-51, Rutherford will host Rickards in the region semi's Tuesday.
