Destin, FL---The Sandestin Golf and Beach resort will soon be the starting point for youth golfers on their road to Augusta National.
On July 19, over 160 youth golfers will travel to the Baytowne Raven Practice Facility to compete in the second annual Drive, Chip & Putt Championships.
Sandestin's local qualifier is one of 250 taking place across all 50 states, as kids ages 7-15 will advance in hopes of playing at one of golf's most hallowed grounds the week before the Masters.
The event is Run by the PGA of America, the USGA, and the Masters Tournament. When organizers met with clubs to see who wanted to host, Sandestin jumped at the chance.
"I immediately volunteered after the meeting," says director of golf at Sandestin, Rick Hileman. "Just because the enormity of it, the involvement of the kids, the families. What a fun event! And we just have a perfect facility for it. So we got on board right away."
Beginners, prodigies, and everyone in between are welcome as spots are still open to sign up.
"You don't have to be an everyday golfer to come out and participate in this event," says Hileman. "And if somebody who really hasn't played much comes out and hits a great drive, hits a good chip, that may be all it takes to get them hooked and say 'Hey mom, hey dad, I want to take lessons. I want to get involved'".
If the event sounds familiar, that's because Destin's Chase Hurt was a part of the inaugural field this past April.
"It's just another great reason as to why we wanted to be involved," says Hileman. "And Chase is a perfect example. He had been playing golf for two years, makes it all the way to Augusta National. Just a world stage that he never expected. And I guarantee he was more in love with he game of golf than he ever was before. And that can happen to anybody."
Registration ends Monday , July 14 on drivechipandputt.com and sandestin.com.
The local qualifier kicks off at 9 AM July 19th.
