Sharks Dealing with Youth Movement This Hoops Season

Port St. Joe, FL---It's not surprising to know Port St. Joe is off to another good start.

It is though a bit of a surprise when you look at coach K's roster and see just one senior, and a bunch of underclassmen!

Suffice to say the Sharks are dealing with a real "youth movement" this season.

"This is the youngest team I've ever coached." says Port St. Joe head Coach Derek Kurnitsky.

Just how young are they you ask?

"We got 3 ninth graders and an 8th grader on the Varsity." says coach Kurnitsky. "We only have one Senior in the whole program."

In fact that 8th grader, Cori Calloway isn't just taking up a roster spot. He's the teams leading scorer. On top of that coach Kurnitsky is getting some leadership from some of the other underclassmen.

"Keep it simple for them" says Kurnitsky "and keep working on fundamentals. We're not gonna change what we do, we're gonna do what do. Keep it simple and just keep working at it every day."

Still coach Kurnitsky knows taking this team a long way won't be a walk in the park.

"It's been fun, it's been a challenge. I told Scott today, I usually just roll the ball out and lets get twenty wins and he says, Coach, you're going to have to coach this year."

And he's coaching well, with a win last night at Liberty, the Sharks now 5-2 on the season, 3-1 in 1-A district 4 play.
