Lakeland, FL---Wednesday turned into an historic day for the girl's basketball program at South Walton, and for that school's entire athletic program in fact.
The Lady Seahawks beat Chipley 58-49 in the 1A State Championship game at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland. That the first ever girl's state title for the Lady Seahawks, and it's also the first ever team state title for the school.
Chipley jumped out to an early lead and if fact led much of Wednesday's game. Up by as many as 8 in the first half, Chipley led it 25-23 at halftime.
The Lady Tigers stretched that lead to four by the end of the third quarter, leading it 39-35.
But the 4th quarter belonged to the Lady Seahawks who outscored Chipley 23-10 in the final period. Casey Perot led South Walton with 13 points, McKenzie Perot added 12 and senior Eve Heffron added 10. Chipley's Jasmine Belser led all scorers with 14.
After the game we spoke with South Walton coach Kevin Craig who told us this:
"it's surreal. From where we were 9 years ago when we came in, they were oh and 25. It's been a lot of hard work, great kids. The commitment, and our senior class, Katie Trejo, Eve Heffron, Morgan Kennedy and Taylor Menard, have been there for four years and they have persevered. And there were times this season when I kicked them off from being captains. But it's just been unreal, what it's done for our school."
South Walton's final record, 23-6, Chipley's 23-5.
The attached video shows the following:
Coach Kevin Craig for Sowal, coach Heather Hingson for Chipley.
The latter's team with the dark uniforms, this is Chipley's Jasmine Belser, she spots up baseline and connects.
Then it's Rakeia Sorey with the steal, and the layup, 7 point Chipley lead.
The Lady Seahawks rally, Casey Perot misses the jumper but McKenzie Perot Logan cleans it up nicely.
Then it's a nice bounce pass down low for Katie Logan who lays it in, it's a two point game at the break, 25-23 Chipley.
It was 39-35 Chipley into the 4th quarter. There the Lady Seahawks take charge, in fact they outscore Chipley 23-10 in the final quarter, Eve Heffron scores off the steal, and then it's then it's Casey again with the jumper. South Walton getting the 58-49 win.
