Santa Rosa Beach, FL--There has to be just a little sense of urgency for David Preast over at South Walton High School, as he looks to find a new head football coach and athletic director.
As we told you last week, Bill Wiles, somewhat surprisingly left those jobs after one year at South Walton to take a gig in the Gainesville area.
By most accounts Wiles leaving without much notice and just a few weeks before the start of fall practice which begins August 6th.
Mr. Preast telling me Monday the advertising for the job ends Tuesday so he and his administrative staff will begin looking over applications starting as that period closes.
He knows they must move quickly given the compressed time frame but he wants to move judiciously, as he puts it to
find the best person for the job, who can continue to build the program, continue to move it forward, and not just athletically, but academically as well.
He adds he wants somebody committed to the long haul, who knows what's it like to coach at a small school in a relatively small town atmosphere.
As for Wiles' departure and how that went down, Preast will only say the time was certainly not good in any way, but he understands Wiles is trying to do what's best for his career and his family and wishes him well.
Preast says it's now his job to do what's best for his student athletes, coaches and the parents, whom he says are very involved in their athletic programs, and very supportive.
Newschannel 7 Sports will keep you up to date as that coaching search continues.
